"For more than twelve years, a painting by Elisabeth Bergsøe hung on a wall in my office. A diagonal line divided a black plane from a plane painted a saturated and unobtrusive yellow. I never succeeded in solving the apparently simple mystery of this painting, since the two planes were engaged in constant dialogue with each other. But I was a fascinated participant in its pulsating rhythm transpiring between dark and light.
To stand inside of a painting, to be inside a painting, to create for ourselves - as spectators – a world that offers others dimensions and other ways of experiencing, are all aspects of the role that the painter takes upon herself.
Elisabeth Bergsøe has, for many years now, been working with the painterly space on the basis of the underlying assumption that it must be possible to redefine the surface of the painting through colour. Through the painter's brushstrokes, the space and the forms within it come to be a world of their own. – That is what makes her a truly concretist painter, continually perfecting her technique and consistent in her quest. Ceaselessly honing the sharp corners and the borders separating one plane of colour from the other. If we can say that we are travelling through space and that this space is full of light and colour, Elisabeth Bergsøe can be said to be the illustrator of this space shuttle.
A cartographer who is journeying toward the light's and the space's infinity."
